The second session of the Parent University Workshop series, Ready, Set, Go… will be held at the Briarcliff Manor Public Library on Monday, October 15 at 6:30 pm.  Topics to be covered include: career exploration, high school transcripts and course selection, college planning, visits and using the web.  Gayle Marchica, President of Eduscape Associates, will lead the workshop.  To register go to EduscapeAssociates.com.  You do not need to attend all of the workshops in the series.

National education experts have identified those characteristics of children from birth through age 5 that are most closely linked to later achievement.  They recommend that the preschool curriculum should emphasize a wide range of language and literacy experiences.  Bank Street College of Education Graduate School Professors, Betsy Grob and Margaret Martinez-DeLuca, will help parents of young children learn what they can do to develop early literacy skills.  Speakers arranged by Garden House School of Briarcliff.

SMART SENIORS PROGRAM AT THE BRIARCLIFF MANOR PUBLIC LIBRARY

SMART SENIORS PROGRAM – Thursday, October 11 at 10:30 am.

This presentation, developed by the NY State Attorney General’s Office, is a statewide elder abuse prevention program designed to help seniors identify potential scams and abuses before they happen, and provide them with information they can use to stay safe and healthy in their daily lives.  Gary S. Brown, the Assistant Attorney General-in-Charge of NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Westchester Regional Office will be the speaker.

TRANSPARENT LANGUAGE ONLINE LIVE DEMO AT THE BRIARCLIFF MANOR PUBLIC LIBRARY

Learn about this free online language learning program available through the Briarcliff Manor Public Library.  Transparent Language Online is a comprehensive program for adults for learning over 80 languages including Arabic, Mandarin, French, Russian, Spanish and ESL.  It allows language learners to follow a simple, linear, learning progression, or jump right in and explore the many, exciting language and culture resources.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP SERIES AT THE BRIARCLIFF MANOR PUBLIC LIBRARY

Have you taken some great photos with your phone and/or digital camera and now you’d like to organize them on your computer, tweak them (for example, re-size and crop), upload them for sharing with others, and print them using inexpensive online printing services?  You can learn how at this two-part workshop at the Briarcliff Manor Public Library.

Wednesday, October 3 from 7:00-8:00 pm – Part 1:  An introductory talk on basic digital photography workflow 

 Wednesday, October 17 from 7:00-8:00 pm – Part 2:  A hands-on session using your own equipment (bring your camera and laptop, if possible)

This workshop series will be led by Jim Christensen from the Westchester Photographic Society.  It is suggested that you attend both sessions.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES AT THE BRIARCLIFF MANOR PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTS: THE HUNGER GAMES (PG-13)

The Hunger Games (PG-13: Parents Strongly Cautioned) will be shown on the Library’s big screen on Friday, September 28 at 7:00 pm.  This new-to-DVD movie is based on the popular Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.  Movie synopsis:  Set in a future where the Capital selects a boy and a girl from the twelve districts to violently fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the latest match. (Note: this movie is recommended for viewers 14 and up.)

The first workshop in the College Planning series, Testing…Testing…1,2,3, will be held at the Briarcliff Manor Public Library on Monday, September 24 from 6:30-8:00 pm.  This workshop will focus on preparing for the major college admissions tests including the PSAT, SAT, SAT II, PLAN & ACT.  Discussion topics to be covered include: Why and When to take each test; The College Board and registering for tests: How much weight do test results hold in the application process?; Test taking strategies and; When to ask for help.  The other sessions in the series are:

6th – 8th graders — Playing with SCRATCH – create your own video game or animated story

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED — 6th – 8th graders, Thursdays, October 18 – December 20 (except Thanksgiving Day) —  Our Children’s/Teens’ Librarian is learning how to use this beginners’ computer programming tool – SCRATCH – and wants to bring some middle schoolers along for the ride. We hope to create very simple video games and/or animated stories for our younger patrons to watch and play. FREE DEMO CLASS OF “CHINESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM FOR ALL CHILDREN” AT BRIARCLIFF MANOR PUBLIC LIBRARY

Ages 4 and up on Saturday, September 22 at 11:00 am (registration required) — This class uses pictures, props and TPR (Total Physcial Response) to create an immersion experience. Students learn through various activities such as: singing, rhyming, practical dialogue, dance and movement. Students interact with their teacher and fellow students to start a lifelong long for Chinese.
